Dice Everywhere? Time to Tame the Chaos

Sharp edge dice set in galactic colors resting in a black dice tray.

Let’s
be honest: you didn’t mean to become a dice goblin. One minute you were just picking up a backup set for your rogue. The next? You're ankle-deep in mystery dice, dnd dice you don’t remember ordering, and a dog chewing on a glittery d20 you swear was retired. And now you’ve got a problem.

Don't get me wrong... it's a good problem to have! But if your dice sets are living rent-free in every drawer, bag, and cupholder you own, it’s time to do something brave: organize them. Because I'm definitely not suggesting you get rid of any of your dice (blasphemy). I'm talking about giving your collection the respect it deserves—and maybe making it easier to find that one set you swear rolls better.

STEP
1: SORT BY PURPOSE, PERSONALITY, OR PURE VIBE

Start by laying out all your dice. Yes, even that one set you found under your couch. Mystery dice, unique dnd dice, misfits, and memory-makers alike. Then choose your sorting strategy:

  • By Character/Class – Keep a set for every character, labeled and ready.

  • By Color/Aesthetic – For the rainbow-minded among us.

  • By Vibe – “These are my moody dice. These are my chaos gremlins. These are my romantic tragedy dice.”

  • By Usage – Keep your rolling workhorses separate from the glittery dice that never get used.

You’re not just organizing—you’re curating a museum of magical math rocks.

Leave a little room in your system for growth.

STEP 2: CHOOSE YOUR METHOD (AND MAKE IT YOUR WHOLE PERSONALITY)

There are more dice organization solutions than types of bardic inspiration. Here are a few tried-and-true options:

  • Tackle Boxes or Bead Organizers – Perfect for keeping your sets separate and visible.

  • Dice Trays with Compartments – Classy and practical, especially if you like to show off.

  • Drawstring Dice Bags – Still a solid choice for a grab-and-go adventurer. Bonus points if it's handmade or ridiculously oversized.

  • Wall-Mounted Displays – For when your dice become part of your decor.

  • Mini Apothecary Jars – Organize by fruit theme, magic school, or emotional damage level.

Just don’t keep them loose in your backpack. That’s how goblins steal them. Or dogs. Or gravity.

STEP 3: LABEL LIKE A DM WITH TRUST ISSUES

You don’t have to go full medieval librarian, but even a little labeling goes a long way—especially when you're swimming in mystery dice.

Use small tags, stickers, or even washi tape to mark:

  • Which set belongs to which character

  • Which ones came from which shop

  • Which ones are cursed (we all have that one set)

Trust yourself. Your future self, mid-boss battle, will thank you.

STEP
4: PREP YOUR LAIR FOR FUTURE LOOT

Let’s not pretend you’re done collecting. There’s always another dnd dice set out there, waiting to whisper your name from a checkout screen. So leave a little room in your system for growth.

Add a “new arrivals” jar. Reserve a drawer. Make a mystery dice corner. Think of it like a dog crate—comforting, contained, and ready for excitement.

STEP 5: KNOW THYSELF (AND THY DICE HABITS)

Are you a chaotic collector? A meticulous matcher? Do you buy dnd dice based on color, theme, or how well they match your dog’s collar?

However you hoard, make your organization match your play style. If you’re a spontaneous roller, keep your favorites handy. If you're sentimental, reserve a space for “dice with a backstory.”

Because organizing your dice isn't about tidying up. It's about treating these beautiful, unpredictable little gremlins like the tiny treasures they are.

FINAL
THOUGHTS

Organizing your RPG dice doesn’t mean taming the wild. It means building a habitat they can thrive in. Whether you’re displaying them like a trophy case or tucking them away like secrets, your dice sets deserve a system as personal as your favorite NPC voice.

So go on—sort, label, store, and make room for the next set that speaks to your soul.

But then again... what if you'd rather keep hoarding than go all Marie Kondo on your math rocks? Totally valid and totally cool. If that's the case, then head straight to 1985 Games. They're seriously one of the reasons I started this blog. Their dice—bold, well-balanced, and endlessly collectible—made me realize how deep the rabbit hole really goes.

But no matter where you take your dice-hoarding quest, just know this: you’re about to have no gold, too many favorites, and an insatiable hunger for your next set of click-clacks.

To hoard or not to hoard. That is not the question. The question is how to hoard with style.
