Most of my life, I was terrified of dogs. I mean  terrified.  One time, when I was a kid, I was walking with my grandmother when a dog came out of nowhere, barking like it had caught a trespasser on its turf. In my panic, I tried to climb up to my grandma’s shoulders—nearly pulling her shorts down to her ankles in the process. That’s how bad it was. I never imagined I’d ever love a dog. But then, in my thirties, I met a pug up for adoption. And this little guy… I don’t know how to explain it. He wasn’t just nervous—he barked at me like he wasn’t sure whether to challenge me or run. He had a deformed leg, those ridiculous buggy eyes, and something about him hit me right in the heart. He felt like he was meant for me. I adopted him, and from that day forward, he was my dog.
